The UTECA Business Plan Competition offers leaders from Canada's financial, general business communities and the business researchers an advance look at today's emerging entrepreneurs. Being a new organization, it is crucial for UTECA to find people who would help to judge and pick out the best business plan. Becoming a judge of UTECA is an extremely exciting and rewarding experience.

What is the benefit of being a judge?

Focused on the students from one of the biggest and most renowned university in Canada -- University of Toronto, UTECA Business Plan Competition promises to attract the biggest population and most prestigious future entrepreneurs across Canada.
The judging will only take you a little time each week, but the benefits will be huge:
  • Great opportunity to meet the future entrepreneurs and establish long-term relationships with them
  • Great opportunity to interact with other judges and sponsors, including prestigious industrial leaders.
  • The competition provides a perfect environment for judges to notice successful candidates for future employment for their organization.

What does a judge do?

Judging the UTECA business plan competition is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with the ideas of some of the most talented students in Canada. The competition will go through three phases, which will be judged by three different pools of judges. Judges will be invited to participate in one of the following three phases:

  • Phase 1: Each judge will be assigned to the judging panel of either Group A, B or C. Each group consists of 5 teams and the copies of each teams business plans will be provided to the judge. Judges will be responsible for evaluating business plan proposals and giving feedback to every participant team.
  • Phase 2: Three finalists (one from each group) will be selected by the respective judging panels and feedback should be given to those finalists at the Venture Fair.
  • Phase 3 (Venture Fair): Each of the three finalists submits a final business plan for review to a panel of judges. The panel of judges will then choose a final winner.

How much time is required?

The copies of business plans will be assigned to each judge. Each judge will have one week, prior to the Venture Fair, to review the 5 business plans assigned and to fill out a feedback form. The Venture Fair will take place on June 7th and more details on the competition format can be found here.

How does a judge work?

The judges will be asked to evaluate the business competition plan considering different issues, including:

  • Is the business plan both highly attractive and clearly realistic?
  • Is the plan clear and well-written?
  • Is the business going to be viable in the current market?
  • What is the business model?
  • What is its target market? Who will be their customers?
  • What is the amount of up-front capital investment required?
  • Do the market and financial projections demonstrate that the team understands its business?
  • How long will it take from the current stage of development to bring this to market?
  • Can this venture achieve a leadership position in its market?
  • What is the expected time and amount of pay-off to investors?
  • Is the reader familiar with and interested in the given market space?

What are the requirements for registration?

Judges will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement. Every business plan will be kept confidential: The copies of the business plans cannot be duplicated or referred to outside of the competition.
